The Library of Birmingham is open

The £189m Library of Birmingham, which houses a collection of one million books, has opened.
The library has more than 200 public access computers, theatres, an exhibition gallery and music rooms.

It was officially opened by Malala Yousafzai, the teenager shot in the head in Pakistan by the Taliban for championing women's rights.

She was treated at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham and now lives in the city.

The library has been built to replace the previous Central Library, built in the 1970s,

Library director Brian Gambles, said the building had
"echoes of the traditional round reading room with a modern twist".
"A fusion of the digital and the traditional is absolutely essential to the vision of the library we have," he said of the project, which he has led for seven years.

The building also contains the Shakespeare Memorial Room, home to a collection of 43,000 books, including copies of the Bard's First, Second, Third and Fourth Folio editions.

The four month opening season for the Library of Birmingham runs from Tuesday 3 September – 31st December is produced & curated by Capsule, supported by Arts Council England.

The Discovery Season programme is inspired by the Library’s internationally-important archives and special collections, and draws on content as diverse as one of the world’s largest books, Victorian children’s games and toys, and even train and bus tickets. The Season will bring to life the Library’s stunning new spaces, from the studio theatre to the towering rotunda and the outdoor garden terraces, and will play host to installations, events, performances and workshops for every age and interest. Events encompassing literature, art, film, illustration, food and debate will be enjoyed under one golden roof in the city’s newest social space.

More details of the excitement in store during the Discovery season (which includes the Library of Lost Books exhibition in November) can be found here

780 million people still have no regular access to clean water, and 2.6 billion have no access to basic sanitation. With rapid population growth, climate change and the naturally unequal distribution of water, rainwater harvesting is an alternate ‐ and effective ‐ way of increasing the availability of water while also reducing the risk of flooding. Rainwater harvesting can decrease the impulsive and wasteful use of water by individuals and businesses alike. It has the double benefit of preserving natural resources while helping to mitigate against climate change.

The
International Rainwater Harvesting Alliance (IRHA), ever concerned with highlighting the benefits of rainwater harvesting, is launching the fourth edition of its international competition that links art to development. Rainwater harvesting has been used to provide a supply of safe and sustainable water for centuries, but in recent generations, it has been forgotten. Through this competition we aim to reintroduce this concept and make the public aware of the various advantages that rainwater harvesting offers.

It is in this context that the IRHA invites artists - professional and amateur alike - to create a poster that presents their vision on the benefits that this resource can have for both humans and nature.
Posters can cover any aspect of rainwater harvesting, for example: domestic use, groundwater recharge, agriculture, or risk reduction. The artist should keep in mind that the aim of the competition is to make the general public aware that rainwater can be (and is!) an essential resource.

The poster must be remarkably good quality to enable printing up to
A0 size (841 x 1189mm), with a minimum resolution of 300 dpi. Its format can be jpeg, pdf, indd, eps or ai. There is a limit of three posters per participant. Posters can be both horizontal (landscape orientation) and vertical (portrait orientation).
There is no entry fee.

Eligibility

The competition is open to all who wish to participate, without reference to age, nationality or profession.

Prize

The creator of the winning poster will be awarded CHF1000 (approx. 1,080 USD). The second place poster will receive CHF600 and third place CHF400.

The best posters will also be used to help us in our important task of promoting the use of rainwater harvesting around the world. This will include
exhibitions in the Geneva area and further afield, as well as on our printed media and website.
