Centre for Printing History and Culture - Launch

The launch of the Centre for Printing History and Culture, a joint initiative between Birmingham City University and the University of Birmingham is taking place between 6 and 8pm in the Nicholson Building in Winterbourne House, on Wednesday 25 November. The event includes an exhibition and talk on Leonard Jay (1888-1963), head of the Birmingham School of Printing and one of Birmingham's most eminent printers. Refreshments will be provided.

The National Student Survey 100% satisfaction




The National Student Survey (NSS) annually gathers students’ opinions on the quality of their courses. Every university in the UK takes part, as do many colleges. Since the survey’s inception in 2005, response rates have been consistently high, with over 300,000 final year students participated in 2015.

Visual Communication are pleased to announce that third year students within the division have overwhelmingly endorsed the course. In this years survey, Graphics students registering 100% satisfaction and Illustration students in excess of 89%.

“The University results have improved by two percentage points overall, a number of courses have achieved 100% - well done” says Professor Geoff Layer, Vice Chancellor of the University of Wolverhampton

The results referred to in this post have been disaggregated from the KIS data shown on Unistats. KIS data reflects the combined NSS scores of courses within the Faculty of Arts at the University of Wolverhampton and number of franchised institutions.

V&A Illustration Awards 2016: Student Illustration

The V&A Illustration Awards are held annually to highlight the best book and magazine illustration published in the UK.

The awards have been running since 1972 and have included a student category since 2005. All entries, including past winners, can be viewed on the main V&A Illustration Awards page. Each year, the winning books are added to the holdings of the National Art Library and may be read in the Library’s Reading Rooms in the V&A.

Entry into the Awards is free
This award is open to anyone who has attended an illustration course in the UK during 2014 or 2015.

How to enter
Entry is via the online entry form only found here. One entry per student only. Entrants may submit up to three images to accompany their entry.

You will need to register here before submitting your entry. To do so, use the link in the Submit an entry box on the right hand side of this page and select the Create new account tab. Once you have registered you can log in following the same link. If you have previously registered, but have forgotten your username or password, please re-register.

The Prize

Blueprint's Ones to Watch - 2015 Graduates


Congratulations to Visual Communication graduate Katarzyna Wozniak, who has been named one of Blueprint magazine's One to Watch graduates of 2015.

Blueprint highlight Kat's powerful image using text on the life and work of Bauhaus designer Lázló Moholy-Nagy. This piece was designed as an introduction page on the constructivism and simplicity of Moholy-Nagy's work.

Designer - Practical Publishing International, Stockport Cheshire

PRACTICAL PUBLISHING IS LOOKING FOR CREATIVE PEOPLE. A superb opportunity has arisen for a Designer to join our highly skilled design team based in our Stockport office.

As a Designer, you will be tasked with working on hobbyist consumer craft titles sold in all major supermarkets and retail outlets. You will support the Art Editors with cover design, packaging, internal page layouts (both new and restyling) and advertisements. As such, this role requires someone who is passionate as well as being deadline-driven and able to interpret briefs and the vision of others.

To be considered for this position you must have:
• Experience of using InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop
• A portfolio of work that demonstrates your design skills
• Experience of working on magazines is beneficial but not essential

"Enabled for Disabled" - poster competition


Skopje is inviting all students worldwide on BA, MA and PhD studies of fine arts, design, visual arts, to enter the 8th International Student Poster Competition.

This year's theme is "Enabled for Disabled". Its goal is to create and promote concept of enabling equal right for disabled people. As designers you are asked to act toward intolerance and injustice.

Disability is not just a health problem. It is a complex phenomenon, reflecting the interaction between features of a person's body and features of the society in which he or she lives. Overcoming the difficulties faced by people with disabilities requires interventions to remove environmental and social barriers.

"Enabled for Disabled" represents a base of cultural interchange where to foster the importance of tolerance as a major goal in society.

Submit your poster as printable PDF, EPS or JPG in B3 format (350x500mm) with resolution of 300 dpi with CMYK color setting. All used fonts should be in outlines or rasterized.

There is no entry fee.


Eligibility
All students worldwide from faculties/academies/colleges of fine arts, design and visual arts are invited to enter.

Prize
Two poster winners will be awarded with:
• Participation as part of the jury of the 9th Skopje Poster Festival

13th International Triennial of the Political Poster Show


Now in its thirteenth edition, the International Triennial of the Political Poster Show aims at comparing the best political poster designers from all countries with a view to encouraging a means of expression which is also a weapon or a testimony.

Each artist may submit a maximum of 5 political posters (provided they have been designed after October 1, 2013), which illustrate political events, social struggles or any social facts. Posters concerning political pictures or theatre pictures are also accepted.

Each artist is requested to enclose a short biography with his sending and each poster will obligatory include a small text explaining the creation context and its political impact.

The selection of the posters will be made by a selection committee made up of graphic artists, critics and social movement leaders.

There is no entry fee.


Eligibility
Open to poster designers from all over the world.

Prize
The overall winner will receive 3.800 Euro (approx. 4,300 USD). Three other prizes will be also offered.

The 13th International Triennial of the Political Poster Show will be presented from October 2016 in Mons, Belgium.

Free font Cabin


Free for commercial use, The Cabin Font is a humanist sans inspired by Edward Johnston's and Eric Gill's typefaces, with a touch of modernism. Cabin incorporates modern proportions, optical adjustments, and some elements of the geometric sans. The weight distribution is almost mono line  although top and bottom curves thin slightly. Counters of the b, g, p and q are rounded and optically adjusted. The curved stem endings have a 10 degree angle. E and F have shorter centre arms. Cabin comes in 8 styles: Regular, Medium, Semibold & Bold, with their corresponding italics. cabin has been designed by Impallari and can be downloaded free here

InkTober - 31 days 31 drawings


Every October, artists all over the world take on the InkTober drawing challenge by doing one ink drawing a day the entire month.  InkTober  as created by Jake Parker in 2009 as a challenge to improve his inking skills and develop positive drawing habits. It has since grown into a worldwide endeavour with thousands of artists taking on the challenge every year.

Anyone can do InkTober, just pick up a pen and start drawing.

Inktober rules
1) Make a drawing in ink (you can do a pencil under-drawing if you want).

2) Post it on your blog (or tumblr, instagram, twitter, facebook, flickr, Pinterest or just pin it on your wall.)

3) Hashtag it with #inktober

4) Repeat

Note: you can do it daily, or go the half-marathon route and post every other day, or just do the 5K and post once a week. What ever you decide, just be consistent with it. Inktober is about growing and improving and forming positive habits, so the more you’re consistent the better.
